Initial Visit Consultation

During the initial visit consultation, you will sit down with Rakesh Gupta, M.D. who is a Board Certified Gastroenterologist.  During this time it is encouraged you tell the doctor any symptoms, discomforts or pain you may feel.  If you are coming in for a routine checkup, the doctor will thoroughly check for any abnormalities.  At this time, the doctor may also recommend follow up exams.

Major Colorectal Screening Procedures (Colon Cancer Screening)

Major colorectal screening procedures are commonly recommended procedures for both preventing and detecting colon cancer.  These procedures include a Fecal Occult Blood Test, a Colonoscopy, a Sigmoidoscopy, and a Doube-Contrast Barium Enema.

Colonoscopy

A colonoscopy allows a doctor to look inside the entire large intestine. The procedure enables the physician to see things such as inflamed tissue, abnormal growths, and ulcers. It is most often used to look for early signs of cancer in the colon and rectum. It is also used to look for causes of unexplained changes in bowel habits and to evaluate symptoms like abdominal pain, rectal bleeding, and weight loss.

Upper Endoscopy

An Upper Endoscopy enables the physician to look inside the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum (first part of the small intestine). The procedure might be used to discover the reason for swallowing difficulties, nausea, vomiting, reflux, bleeding, indigestion, abdominal pain, or chest pain. Upper endoscopy is also called EGD, which stands for esophagogastroduodenoscopy.

Polyp Removal

The doctor can remove most abnormal growths in your colon, like a polyp, which is a growth in the lining of the bowel. Polyps are removed using tiny tools passed through the scope. Most polyps are not cancerous, but they could turn into cancer. Just looking at a polyp is not enough to tell if it is cancerous. The polyps are sent to a lab for testing. By identifying and removing polyps, a colonoscopy likely prevents most cancers from forming.

Abdominal Sonogram

An abdominal sonogram is an imaging procedure used to examine the internal organs of the abdomen; including the liver, gallbladder, spleen, pancreas, and kidneys. The blood vessels that lead to some of these organs can also be looked with a sonogram.

Fecal Occult Blood Test

This procedure, which is also referred to as stool guaiac testing after the chemical that is used in the test, is employed to detect microscopic amounts of blood in the stool, which may indicate a bleeding polyp or cancer in the colon. Since this test is usually performed on three successive stool samples, your doctor will likely give you a kit to collect the samples at home and then return them to his or her office. The test can show blood in your stool if you've ingested red meat prior to obtaining the samples, so it's important that you follow your doctor's diet instructions prior to taking the test. If one or more of the samples tests positive for blood, you should undergo further testing (colonoscopy) to find out where the blood is coming from as well as to rule out the presence of a polyp or cancer.

Hemorrhoid Coagulation Treatment

Infrared Coagulation (IRC) is the most widely used office treatment for hemorrhoids and is preferred over other methods because it is fast, well-tolerated by patients, and virtually problem-free. A small probe contacts, the area above the hemorrhoid, exposing the tissue to a burst of infrared light for about one second. This coagulates the veins above the hemorrhoid causing it to shrink and recede. The patient may feel a sensation of heat very briefly, but it is generally not painful. Therefore anesthetic is usually not required.

Laryngoscopy

Laryngoscopy is an examination that lets your doctor look at the back of your throat, your voice box (larynx), and vocal cords with a scope (laryngoscope).
